XUV 7XO: First-in-World DAVINCI Suspension System

What makes the XUV 7XO such a joyful SUV to drive? Meet the DAVINCI dampers

Once in a while, there comes a piece of technology that changes everything. It’s been a trend we’ve seen in various aspects of our life. From the bulky and primitive mainframe computers that needed entire buildings to house them to the sleek laptop or smartphone you’re probably reading this on right now, the pace of progress in technology has transformed our lives and been all the better for it – and it's a similar story when it comes to the cars we drive today. Technology has been an enabler in making Mahindra’s SUVs safer, faster, easier to drive and more comfortable too. The first thought when you think about technology in cars is the infotainment system or the digital instrument cluster since it is your first point of contact with a digital system inside the car. There’s a lot more working behind the scenes, under the skin to make your Mahindra SUV even better to drive than its predecessors, and one such piece of tech are the DAVINCI dampers which are part of the suspension on the Mahindra XUV 7XO, with the suspension tech being the first-of-its kind in the world.

What are DAVINCI dampers?

One of the biggest updates we made to the XUV 7XO over its predecessor is the addition of DAVINCI dampers along with the already present Frequency Dependent Dampers or FDD, to further improve the ride quality of the XUV 7XO while also taking a step forward in terms of improving the NVH inside the cabin, along with the driving dynamics. Mahindra had first announced the DAVINCI dampers in 2025 and were seen on the Mahindra NU_IQ platform.

How do dampers work?

We need to understand how a conventional damper works since it is a fairly simple but critical component of the suspension system. A damper’s main role is to absorb tyre shocks, isolate a car’s body from the road imperfections and to keep the tyres in contact with the road for comfort, stability and control. A spring lets the wheel of a vehicle move over bumps, but if you only had springs in your vehicle, it would keep on bouncing like a pogo stick once it had been over a bump. The damper is essential to resist this motion.

One of the key components in a damper are the valves and shims. The valve regulates the flow of oil within a damper body and provides the damping force. The shim stack on the other hand are thin metal discs stacked on top of the other and act as flexible valves, bending according to the pressure that the oil applies on them and thus changing the rate of flow of oil. In a conventional linear damper, the damping force in a damper rises in direct proportion to how fast the piston is moving through the oil in a damper. Increase the speed of the piston and you get an increase in damping force that roughly corresponds to it over a certain range of speeds. The result is that you get a compromise between ride comfort and body control since they can’t be tuned separately, which is where a DAVINCI damper comes in.

DAVINCI dampers: Breaking down the tech

The DAVINCI’s basic construction is similar to that of a conventional double tube damper, but the real magic happens inside the valve, more specifically, the shim stack. The difference is in the way that the shims are shaped and arranged. These plates allow for a different rate of oil to flow through the valve at different points in the damper’s travel, and this changes with the nature of the forces applied to them. What it also means is that these plates allow for the decoupling between the primary ride and the secondary ride of a vehicle – which means that it can be tuned for a wider breadth of abilities. These dampers allow for the smaller ripples, bumps and imperfections in the road to be filtered out without them being transferred to the body at lower speeds, but once you’re past a threshold of speed, the DAVINICI dampers firm up significantly. For example, if you hit the lip of a massive pothole at higher speeds, the dampers will be firmer and ensure the wheel does not move uncontrollably on impact. But even when subjected to extreme forces that push a damper to its limits, the DAVINCI dampers remain more compliant than a conventional damper. This breadth of ability alone makes these DAVINCI dampers – a first-of-their-kind in the world – far more superior to existing damper technologies in terms of technical ability.

Benefits of the DAVINCI damper

As we mentioned before, the DAVINCI damper allows engineers to dial in an ideal setup that provides superior comfort as well as body control, but another benefit of these dampers is that they’re completely passive units. A lot of dampers allow for this sort of non-linear damping force to be applied but these are usually active or semi-active systems. In the case of the DAVINCI damper, the whole thing is a mechanical unit with the valves controlling the damping forces independently — there are no sensors and controllers managing the suspension. That last bit is why these DAVINCI dampers are cost effective, and thanks to none of the electronics and wiring being involved, the cost of manufacturing, servicing or replacing if needed also becomes a lot more affordable. This system is also modular, and while you have seen it debut on the Mahindra XUV 7XO, you can expect these dampers to be featured in the next generation of compact and mid-size SUVs from Mahindra in the near future.

How do DAVINCI dampers feel like in the real world?

The first thing you will notice while driving the XUV 7XO equipped with DAVINCI dampers is how well the suspension irons out the smaller imperfections in the road. Instead of a constant pitter patter in the cabin, there is a lot more quietness in the cabin and smoothness in the ride. When driving at higher speeds, there’s a sense of steadiness and confident body control with well-contained vertical movement over undulating sections of road. This feeling of a strong vehicle with a robust suspension setup will make a world of difference for you as a driver and also reduce driving fatigue on longer trips. Hit the brakes too quickly and the nose-dive of the vehicle is well-controlled, making for a much calmer driving experience, with the Mahindra XUV 7XO reacting to the changes in speed without feeling too unsettled. And the handling has also seen improvements for the better.

But don’t just take our word for it. To experience these first-of-their-kind DAVINCI dampers demonstrate their abilities in the real world, head to your local Mahindra dealership and get yourself a test drive of the Mahindra XUV 7XO – the results shall speak for themselves.
